ASX 200 closes in green; Zip, Myer lead gains

Australian share market closed on a positive note with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 gaining 0.26% or 17.40 points to end at 6,807.30 points today (July 26).

With assistance from some banks and BNPL providers, energy and mining companies took the initiative and drove the advance. Following Walmart's lowering of profits, retailers fell on ASX today.

Key pointers from ASX close today

  • The ASX 200 benchmark index closed higher on Tuesday, up 0.26% at 6,807.30 points.
  • Top performing stocks featured Zip Company Limited (ASX:ZIP) and Paladin Energy Ltd (ASX:PDN) ending 19.88%, and 8.13% higher respectively.
  • Shares of Myer Holdings closed trading at AU$0.49 each up 21.25% today.
  • Bottom performing stocks in this index were Iress Limited (ASX:IRE) and Persus Mining Limited (ASX:PRU), down 6.55% and 5.33% respectively.
  • In last five trading sessions, the benchmark index has gained 2.37%, but is down 8.56% on year-to-date basis.
  • Most of the sectors ended with gains with six out of 11 ASX sectors closing the day in green territory.
  • Energy was the best performing sector, gaining 2.82%.
  • Consumer Discretionary was the worst performing sector today, down 1.71%, followed by industrials which plunged 0.77% today.
  • Volatility indicator A-VIX index was up 1.43% today.
  • The All-ordinaries Index advanced 0.27%.

News Makers

Myer Holdings Limited (ASX:MYR): Myer shared its results guidance for the 52 weeks to 30 July 2022. In 52 weeks in FY22, overall sales increased between 12.3%.

Shares of Myer Holdings closed trading at AU$0.49 each up 21.25% today.

Meeka Metals Limited (ASX:MEK): The Circle Valley project in Western Australia continues to produce high-grade rare earth tests, according to Meeka Metals' (MEK) release today.

Meeka Metals' shares last exchanged hands flat at AU$0.051 each on ASX today.

SRG Global (ASX:SRG): SRG Global (SRG) has signed long-term contracts worth $90 million with Australian gold miner Northern Star Resources (NST) and New Zealand power provider Meridian Energy today.

Shares of SRG ended flat at AU$0.69 apiece on ASX today.

Bond yields

Australia’s 10-year Bond Yield stands at 3.367% as of 5.00 PM AEST.

In global markets

As a week of significant risk events got underway, Wall Street's key indices ended the night with mixed results on Monday (July 25). A full calendar of events includes a Federal Reserve rate decision, GDP data, and earnings from the majority of the top firms in the S&P 500.

In Asia, Nikkei in Japan lost 0.16% while the Asia Dow gained 0.050%, Shanghai Composite in China increased 0.83% and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong rose 1.77% at 5.10 PM AEST.

In Commodities markets

Crude Oil WTI was spotted trading at US$98.33/bbl at 4.08 PM AEST while Brent Oil was at US$101.96/bbl at 5.13 PM AEST.

Gold was at US$1730.10 an ounce, copper was at US$3.437/Lbs and iron ore was at US$104/T at 5.13 PM AEST.
