  • New capability reduces reliance on imported battery materials
  • Strategic step toward battery tech for aerospace and electric aviation

Li-S Energy (ASX:LIS) has reached a significant technological milestone by producing Australia’s first lithium metal foils at its advanced battery facility in Geelong, Victoria. This achievement marks the establishment of a sovereign capability for high-purity lithium foil manufacturing, a crucial component in next-generation battery technologies.

The company successfully installed and commissioned new lithium extrusion equipment, ahead of schedule, enabling the production of 100-micron thick pure lithium metal foils. This progress allows Li-S Energy to manufacture its own lithium foils domestically, significantly reducing dependency on imported materials.

This in-house production is set to benefit multiple areas—enhancing battery performance, reducing material lead times, and improving manufacturing consistency. These foils are vital to Li-S Energy’s lithium-sulfur and lithium-metal batteries, known for their higher energy density when compared to traditional lithium-ion cells.

By internalising the foil manufacturing process, Li-S Energy can precisely control foil thickness, purity, and handling—key factors that directly affect battery cell performance and safety. These improvements align with the company’s ongoing efforts to optimize cell quality and support cost-effective production in Australia.

The local capability also unlocks export opportunities as global demand for high-quality lithium foils grows. Future phases include rolling out lamination and coating equipment, supported by the Australian Government’s Industry Growth Program. This will help the company expand its product offerings and scale its proprietary nano-material coating technologies.

Li-S Energy is actively targeting markets such as electric aviation, aerospace, and defence with its lightweight, high-capacity lithium-sulfur and lithium-metal batteries. These batteries can potentially double the energy density of standard lithium-ion solutions, offering critical advantages for high-performance applications.

While Li-S Energy is not part of the ASX 100 index and does not influence the broader ASX 100 share price, its developments contribute significantly to Australia’s standing in advanced battery innovation.

The lithium foil initiative underlines Li-S Energy’s commitment to building a resilient, cost-efficient, and globally competitive battery technology platform within Australia. As the transition toward electrification accelerates across industries, this advancement places the company at the forefront of energy storage innovation.
