Sydney-based Nyrada Inc (ASX:NYR) has taken a significant step forward in its drug development efforts. The company recently completed an in vivo micronucleus study on rats, which confirmed the safety of its NYR-BI03 drug candidate. This study, involving an ASX healthcare stock, focuses on ensuring no genetic damage and paves the way for Phase 1 human trials later this year.
Promising Results for Stroke and TBI Treatment
The NYR-BI03 drug is being developed to treat both stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Earlier this year, a preclinical stroke study revealed the drug’s potential by achieving a statistically significant neuroprotective effect, rescuing 42% of brain tissue in the penumbra region of treated animals. These findings build optimism for its future development.
Broader Potential in Cardioprotection
In addition to its neuroprotective properties, NYR-BI03 has shown promise in cardiovascular health. A preclinical study in October demonstrated that the drug achieved an 86% cardioprotection effect following myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. This result was also statistically significant, suggesting that NYR-BI03 may have broader applications beyond stroke and brain injury.
Looking Ahead: Human Trials
With the completion of these Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) studies, Nyrada plans to submit a Human Research Ethics Application. This submission is a crucial step toward initiating the first Phase 1 human trials, which are expected to begin in late 2024.
Nyrada's progress in developing NYR-BI03 is generating attention, and with shares trading around 10 cents, the company is positioned for continued momentum as it advances its research and development efforts.
