Breakthroughs in Coronary Disease Indicate Potential Future Reduction in Deaths

Coronary disease remains the leading cause of death in Australia, accounting for about 24% of all fatalities. While the World Health Organisation estimates that approximately 17.9 million people worldwide succumb to coronary diseases annually, recent developments suggest a promising decline in these numbers.

Australia is recognized for its overall health and longevity. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's latest report, "Australia’s Health 2022: In Brief," life expectancy in Australia has improved significantly. As of April 2022, Australians can expect to live to an average age of 83.2 years—81.2 years for men and 85.3 years for women—up from 73.9 years and 80.1 years respectively in 1990.

While coronary heart disease remains a leading cause of death among men, and dementia and lung cancer are major concerns for women, there are positive trends. Survival rates for various cancers are improving, and rates of alcohol abstention have increased from 16.3% in 2001 to 23.8% in 2022. Additionally, the average life satisfaction rating in Australia stands at 6.7 out of 10.

Despite these improvements, coronary disease continues to claim lives at an alarming rate. However, advancements from entities such as Anteris Technologies Ltd, Race Oncology Ltd, EBR Systems Ltd, and Advara HeartCare are making significant strides.

Understanding Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs)

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) include disorders of the heart and blood vessels, such as coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and rheumatic heart disease. Over 80% of CVD-related deaths are due to heart attacks and strokes, with one-third occurring in individuals under 70.

Key risk factors include an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption. Environmental factors like air pollution also play a role. Effective preventive measures involve quitting tobacco, reducing salt intake, consuming more fruits and vegetables, engaging in regular physical activity, and avoiding harmful alcohol use. Health policies supporting these changes, along with access to essential medicines, are crucial for reducing premature deaths.

Ongoing Innovations in Heart Health

Despite high rates of CVD, there is significant progress in medical research and treatment. For instance:

  • Advara HeartCare provides comprehensive cardiovascular care through non-invasive procedures and remote monitoring. Since 2006, it has positively impacted over 500,000 patients annually, focusing on personalized care and advancing heart disease management.
  • Anteris Technologies Ltd is at the forefront of developing innovative heart technologies. Its DurAVR™ aortic replacement valve and upcoming Transcatheter Edge to Edge Repair (TEER) system are designed to improve patient outcomes and address severe cardiac conditions.
  • Race Oncology Ltd focuses on integrating cardio-protective benefits into cancer treatments. Its reformulated Bisantrene aims to provide both anti-cancer and heart protection benefits.
  • EBR Systems is revolutionizing cardiac rhythm management with its leadless WiSE CRT System, which uses wireless technology to pace the heart more effectively. Recent trial results, published in JAMA Cardiology, highlight the system's success in improving heart failure treatment.

While the battle against coronary disease continues, these advancements in technology and research offer hope for reducing mortality rates and improving heart health. The ongoing commitment to innovation and prevention could lead to significant reductions in the impact of cardiovascular diseases.
