KKR Asset Management to acquire ProTen Pty Ltd from Aware Super
ProTen supports nationwide poultry infrastructure across multiple states
Transaction strengthens KKR’s food supply chain portfolio in the region
Global private equity firm KKR Asset Management has announced a definitive agreement to acquire ProTen Pty Ltd, a major player in Australia’s agriculture infrastructure landscape. The deal aligns with KKR’s expanding portfolio within the All Ordinaries index-linked sector, as the firm deepens its exposure to food production and rural infrastructure assets in Australia.
ProTen's Integral Role in Australia's Poultry Sector
ProTen has grown to become a prominent developer and operator of poultry infrastructure, with a footprint stretching across more than half the country. The company’s operations are pivotal in ensuring a steady supply of poultry protein for domestic consumption, underpinned by facilities located in key agricultural regions including Queensland and South Australia.
Since being acquired by Aware Super in 2018, ProTen has undergone substantial expansion. The superannuation fund’s infrastructure strategy contributed to the rapid scaling of ProTen’s property holdings and operational breadth, enhancing its relevance across Australia's food production chain.
KKR Aims to Scale Agricultural Supply Chain Exposure
With the acquisition, ProTen will become part of KKR’s Asia Pacific Infrastructure Investors II Fund. The move further diversifies KKR’s portfolio, which already includes strategic assets across transport, energy, and airport infrastructure in the region.
The acquisition highlights a growing emphasis on food security and long-term sustainable supply chains. ProTen's operations support contract-based production across Australia, offering stable infrastructure for producers under long-duration agreements.
Leadership Perspectives from Both Sides of the Transaction
KKR’s regional infrastructure leadership views ProTen as a well-positioned enterprise for future scaling. The group’s experience in managing complex infrastructure assets, paired with its global network, is expected to enhance ProTen’s operating efficiency and nationwide reach.
Meanwhile, Aware Super acknowledged its role in helping ProTen transition into a leading agriculture infrastructure provider. The fund’s infrastructure team led the business through a period of expansion, which included development initiatives that broadened its national impact.
Infrastructure Sector Sees Heightened Activity Across Australia
The ProTen deal signals continuing interest in rural and agricultural infrastructure as a durable asset class. KKR’s growing Australian portfolio aligns with rising demand for stable, scalable platforms that support essential services, particularly in food production.
