The National Australia Bank Ltd (ASX: NAB) is witnessing a decline in its share price during early trade on Tuesday, and the banking giant's share price zoomed later to close 0.95% higher at AU$34.14 apiece.
Interestingly, the volatility in NAB's share price today may actually be viewed as positive news for its shareholders. The volatility is attributed to the company trading ex-dividend for its upcoming interim dividend payment, signaling that payday is approaching for eligible shareholders.
When a company's shares go ex-dividend, it indicates that the rights to a pending dividend payment have been settled. Consequently, individuals purchasing its shares from this point forward will not be entitled to receive the payout when it is distributed. Instead, the rights to the dividend remain with the seller, even if they no longer hold those shares on the payment date.
NAB recently released its half-year results, reporting a 0.9% decline in net operating income to AU$10,138 million and a 12.8% drop in cash earnings to AU$3,548 million. Despite the earnings dip, the NAB board decided to increase its interim dividend by 1.2% to a fully franked 84 cents per share. It is this dividend that NAB's shares are going ex-dividend for today.
Eligible shareholders can anticipate receiving this dividend in just under two months, on 3 July.
Looking ahead, analysts at Goldman Sachs anticipate another 85 cents per share fully franked final dividend in November, bringing NAB's total dividends for FY 2024 to AU$1.68 per share. Following this, the broker expects the NAB board to maintain its dividend at this level for the foreseeable future.
Goldman Sachs forecasts fully franked dividends of AU$1.68 per share annually until at least FY 2028. Based on the current NAB share price of AU$33.88, this translates to dividend yields of 5% per annum over the period.
While the temporary decline in the NAB share price may concern some investors, the impending dividend payout presents an opportunity for eligible shareholders to benefit from the company's dividend distribution. As investors await the dividend payday, NAB's long-term dividend outlook remains steady, offering potential income generation for shareholders in the years ahead.
