  • Trent Peterson resumes role as Adairs chairman
  • Rachel Kelly joins Adairs board with global retail experience
  • Leadership changes aim to strengthen retail strategy

Adairs (ASX:ADH), a prominent Australian homewares and furniture retailer, has announced the return of Trent Peterson as its independent chairman. Peterson, who had been serving as interim chairman since September, now steps into the role officially, bringing with him a wealth of experience and continuity at a critical time for the company.

This is not Peterson’s first leadership stint with Adairs. He previously held the role of non-executive chairman from 2010 until the company made its debut on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2015. His return is seen as a stabilising move, with his deep familiarity with the brand and its growth trajectory likely to play a vital role in navigating the current retail landscape.

In addition to his role at Adairs, Peterson is a non-executive director at three other well-known retailers: Dusk (ASX:DSK), Shaver Shop (ASX:SSG), and Universal Store (ASX:UNI). His continued presence across these boards underscores his influential position in the Australian retail sector and provides a broad market perspective that could benefit Adairs’ strategic direction.

Further strengthening the board, Rachel Kelly has joined Adairs as an independent non-executive director. Kelly brings a strong background in fashion and lifestyle retail, having held senior roles at Just Group and later becoming the global chief executive of T2 Tea. At T2, she led the company’s international expansion efforts, successfully elevating the Australian tea brand into new global markets.

Most recently, Kelly served as executive vice president of sales for the Asia-Pacific region at Afterpay (ASX:SQ2), gaining experience in digital payments and consumer technology trends—insights that are increasingly important in today’s omnichannel retail environment.

With this combination of experienced leadership and new strategic insights, Adairs appears focused on reinforcing its position in the competitive homewares market. These boardroom changes reflect a broader commitment to strengthening governance and setting a clear direction for future growth.

As the retail sector continues to evolve, particularly with the increasing integration of digital and physical retail spaces, such leadership moves are critical in shaping a company's adaptability and long-term success. The refreshed leadership at Adairs sets a foundation for renewed momentum in a challenging yet opportunity-rich retail climate.
