TPG Telecom and Optus Receive ACCC Approval for Regional Network Deal

TPG Telecom (ASX:TPG) is set to broaden its mobile phone service reach across Australia following approval from the competition regulator for a new network-sharing arrangement with Optus. This deal marks a significant expansion for TPG’s mobile network, allowing it to cover a much larger portion of regional Australia.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Australian Competition Tribunal have given the green light to the network-sharing agreement between TPG Telecom and Optus. This follows the rejection of a previous proposal for a similar partnership between TPG and Telstra (ASX:TLS), which would have provided broader access to mobile infrastructure.

Under the new agreement with Optus (ASX:OPT), TPG Telecom will gain access to an additional 600,000 square kilometers of network coverage. This expanded reach will enable TPG to offer its mobile services to regions that are home to approximately 17% of Australia’s population. While this arrangement does not provide as extensive coverage as the blocked Telstra deal would have, it represents a substantial enhancement of TPG’s service area.

Iñaki Berroeta, Chief Executive Officer of TPG Telecom, expressed enthusiasm about the deal, stating, “For the first time, the TPG Telecom mobile network will cover most towns in Australia.” The network-sharing deal with Optus will allow TPG to extend its presence into more remote and regional locations, improving service availability for a broader range of Australians.

The deal represents a strategic move for TPG Telecom, which had been seeking to expand its network reach following the regulatory setback with Telstra. The partnership with Optus is expected to improve TPG’s competitive position in the telecommunications market, particularly in regional areas where network coverage has historically been less comprehensive.

Despite the advantages of this new agreement, it is worth noting that TPG’s access to mobile towers through this deal is more limited compared to the Telstra arrangement. However, the expanded coverage area and increased service reach are expected to bring significant benefits to TPG’s customers and contribute to the company’s growth.

The network-sharing agreement with Optus represents a positive development for TPG Telecom, positioning the company to better serve a wider Australian audience and strengthen its market presence.
