FYI Resources teams up with EcoGraf to develop enhanced HPA anode coating material

A significant 4N and 5N High Purity Alumina (HPA) player, FYI Resources Limited (ASX:FYI; OTCQX:FYIRF; FSE:SDL), has partnered with Australia’s diversified battery anode player, EcoGraf Limited (ASX: EGR; FSE: FMK; OTCQX: ECGFF) for a joint program to develop an enhanced HPA high-density anode coating material, used in the manufacturing of Lithium-ion anode cells.

Under the new technical program, both companies will explore opportunities to develop an enhanced coating material to improve battery performance. Additionally, the companies will also look at measures to innovate coin cells by coating EGR’s spherical graphite (SPG) layer and FYI’s high-quality, nanoparticle HPA.

The joint development program will be carried out in a leading commercial battery material research facility, located in the US. As the world is transitioning towards low-carbon emission technologies, the addition of HPA-coated anode material could significantly enhance the development of both the companies in Australia.

Initiative in line with Federal Government’s modern manufacturing strategy

The development of value-added battery materials is in line with the Federal Governments' critical and battery 'modern manufacturing strategy' and Western Australia's 'future battery industry strategy.'

With rising demand for batteries as a part of the green revolution and competition to develop high-end batteries, the sector is gaining traction and significant investment.

At Benchmark Minerals Intelligence, the sales price for coated anode ranges between US$6,000 to US$10,000 per tonne. However, the demand is expected to rise further by nearly 30% per annum as the world is moving towards low-carbon emission technologies.

In fact, the advantage of developing Active Anode Material (AAM) in Australia could be significant with indirect economic benefits in the country to be more than three times.

High-end HPA Anode Coatings Program

The advanced technical program will begin with the characterisation of key properties of EcoGraf’s purified SPG and FYI’s nano HPA for the active anode material. Raw materials will be utilised to prepare solvent-compatible dispersion of HPA nanopowders of various particle sizes, which will be applied as ultra-thin HPA onto the pitch-coated SPG, as an AAM.

Enhanced HPA doped-coated SPG and pitch-coated SPG will be applied to copper substrates to create a negative electrode for integrating into coin cells for cycling tests and electrochemical performance.

The program is anticipated to take three months and include scope to perform long-term cycling of the best formulation of the coated anode in both half-cell and full cells.

Shares of FYI last traded at AU$0.345 per share as of 24 November 2021.
