Highlights

  • Leidos, an American defence contractor, takes over Cobham Aviation’s Special Mission arm.
  • Cobham Special Mission division provides mission-critical services to the Australian government.

Earlier this week, US-based FORTUNE® 500 aviation and science solutions company Leidos confirmed the acquisition of Cobham Aviation Services’ Special Mission division. Cobham Aviation Services is Australia’s leading charter airline service provider.

Cobham Special Mission offers airborne border surveillance and search-and-rescue (SAR) services to the Federal Government and covers Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as well as the SAR region. Leidos first announced this acquisition on 2 August 2022. Cobham Special Mission will be merged into and serve as a division of Leidos Australia, and the acquisition of Cobham Special Mission marks Leidos' entry into the Australian aviation sector.

A glance at the acquisition outcome

Following this acquisition, the two companies will work together to provide the Australian government mission-critical services using cutting-edge command-and-control systems and sensors on board aircraft. The Cobham Special Mission business, as an aerospace expert, owns 14 modified aircraft for this.

A few of the services offered by Special Mission are listed below:

  • Cobham Special Mission is involved in one of the world’s largest managed service civil maritime surveillance operations as per an agreement reached with the Australian Border Force. This also includes patrolling Australia's 8.2 million km2 of the EEZ.
  • On behalf of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Cobham Special Mission delivers fixed-wing SAR response capacity over land and sea.
  • Special Mission runs a specialised system for training mission crew and trains more than 30 mission aircrew annually.
