In a short period, American Canyon High School sophomore Jordan Woodson has left a significant impact on the basketball court. As a freshman last year, she ranked second on the team with 11.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Now, in her sophomore year, Woodson continues to elevate her performance.

With the Wolves holding a 6-3 record in the Vine Valley Athletic League, Woodson stood out last week, averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds per game. Notably, she delivered a stellar 22-point, 12-rebound performance in a victory over Sonoma Valley and a 15-point, 14-rebound outing against Casa Grande. These accomplishments have earned her the recognition of Times-Herald Athlete of the Week.
Woodson reflects on her growth, stating, "I definitely feel the game is coming easier to me my second year on varsity. This year I kind of know what to expect at the varsity level. I'm finding an easier time finding my shot and playing defense."
Coach Angela Davis expresses satisfaction with Woodson's progress, emphasizing her willingness to seek guidance and ask questions in practice. Davis notes Woodson's natural athleticism and her growing understanding of the game's nuances. Woodson has evolved into the team's primary post player, showcasing her versatility by handling the ball, providing assists, and even stepping outside for shots.
Despite initial challenges adjusting to the post position, Woodson has adapted and emphasizes the importance of finding her shot and creating space in the post. She credits her teammates and their collective effort for the team's recent success, emphasizing strong team chemistry and defensive prowess.
Woodson particularly enjoyed the win over Sonoma Valley, as the team avenged a previous loss to the Dragons. She acknowledges the team's collaborative effort in studying opponents through film analysis and defensive strategies.
Looking ahead, Woodson remains humble, recognizing that the team's recent success is a result of collective contributions. Coach Davis believes that if Woodson continues to improve, her potential is limitless, praising her well-rounded skills, rebounding prowess, fast-break capabilities, and proficiency in free-throw shooting, making her a formidable and versatile player.
