If you're experiencing difficulties accessing your Facebook and Instagram accounts this afternoon, you're not alone. Both social media apps are currently down for most users globally, along with Facebook Messenger and Threads, all of which are part of the Meta parent group. Some users are also reporting issues with sending and receiving WhatsApp messages.
The outage seems to have begun around 3:20 pm, with no indication of when it will be resolved. Users are encountering messages like "session expired" or "unexpected error" when attempting to access the platforms.
According to Downdetector, there have been over 160,000 reports of Facebook being down in the UK, with Instagram receiving over 40,000 reports. This outage marks one of the biggest issues for Meta in years.
While the cause of the problem remains unclear, many affected users have turned to rival social site X (formerly Twitter), with the hashtag #facebookdown trending on Twitter.
Concerns have been raised about potential hacking due to users being logged out and encountering messages stating their password is incorrect, but there is no evidence of this at present.
Additionally, Facebook Messenger, which runs as a separate app on most mobile devices, is also experiencing issues, with users being logged out similarly.
However, the messaging service WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, appears to be unaffected.
Such widespread issues with Meta apps are rare, and it is hoped that the tech team is working urgently to resolve the glitch. Further information is awaited regarding the cause of the problem and when access to accounts will be restored.
