Queensland Labor backbencher Jim Madden will not contest the next state election after announcing his resignation from politics.

The member for Ipswich West made the announcement in Queensland parliament "after careful consideration of my ongoing physical and mental health".

The decision comes after a series of allegations against the MP, who was recently cleared of wrongdoing over allegations of misusing taxpayer funds to buy artwork

"In relation to the recent allegations made in the media I've always tried to uphold the standards expected by my community and the Australian Labor Party. I have fully participated in processes about issues raised," Mr Madden told parliament on Wednesday.

The claims were detailed in a letter from Queensland's clerk of parliament Neil Laurie to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and related to the purchase of three photographs at a school auction.

Mr Laurie said the investigation established the West Ipswich MP bought three pieces of artwork, including one that was given to a third party and later retrieved.

He said the photographs were "by default paid for by the member personally" and were valued at $185.

"I spent my own money buying a piece of art from a local special school to support their fundraising efforts," Mr Madden told parliament.

"It is a great part of my role as the member for Ipswich West to support the effort and creative energy of young people in our community."

Mr Madden, was elected to state parliament in 2015, said he made the decision "some time ago" that he would not contest the 2024 election.
