Washington H. Soul Pattinson (ASX:SOL)

Washington H. Soul Pattinson, established in 1903, is a long-standing investment company with a diversified portfolio across various industries and asset classes. Key holdings include significant stakes in TPG Telecom (ASX:TPG), New Hope Group (ASX:NHC), and a cross-shareholding in Brickworks (ASX:BKW).

The company’s core mission is to generate superior returns for shareholders through capital growth and steadily increasing dividends. As the second-oldest publicly listed company on the ASX, Washington H. Soul Pattinson has a distinguished record of maintaining dividend payments since its inception.

For a mature company like Washington H. Soul Pattinson, key metrics such as return on invested capital (ROIC) and revenue growth are critical indicators of performance. For FY23, the company achieved an ROIC of 8.20%. Revenue, however, has experienced a compounded decline of -4.4% in recent years. Consistently achieving a ROIC of 10% or more is often seen as a sign of effective capital investment, and variations from this benchmark can indicate potential concerns about capital efficiency.

Telstra Group Ltd (ASX:TLS)

Founded in 1975, Telstra Group Ltd is Australia's largest telecommunications company, serving over 22.5 million retail mobile accounts as of 2023. The company is engaged in building and operating telecommunications networks and offers a broad range of services, including fixed broadband, mobile, data and IP, and digital media. With a presence in over 20 countries outside Australia, Telstra provides services to both governments and businesses.

Telstra’s significant competitive advantage lies in its extensive reach and scale, providing coverage to 99.6% of the Australian population and offering 5G services to over 85% of the country.

When assessing the share price of Washington H. Soul Pattinson, one useful metric is the dividend yield. Currently, the dividend yield for SOL shares stands at around 2.54%, which is slightly above its 5-year average of 2.52%. This suggests that SOL shares are trading at a higher dividend yield than their historical average.

For Telstra Group Ltd, the historical dividend yield is approximately 4.53%, compared to its 5-year average of 4.50%. This indicates that the TLS share price is in line with its historical dividend yield, reflecting stability in its dividend payouts.

Washington H. Soul Pattinson continues to show growth in its share price and maintain its dividend tradition, Telstra remains a strong player in the telecommunications sector with consistent dividend yields. Both companies offer valuable insights into their respective industries and financial health through their share price performance and dividend metrics.
