Australia has unveiled a transformative landmine detection technology, inspired by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which aims to revolutionize global mine clearance efforts and enhance safety in contaminated regions.

Developed collaboratively by the CSIRO and Australian company RFC Ambrian, the handheld device offers a significant breakthrough in detecting explosives in low-metal minefields. These include anti-tank and anti-personnel mines that often evade conventional detection methods.

To bring this innovative technology to market, MRead has been established as the commercial entity spearheading its implementation. Recent trials conducted in Angola, a region heavily affected by landmines, showcased promising results. MRead CEO John Shanahan, a former NATO commanding general, highlighted the challenges of developing portable devices that earlier US-funded research in the mid-2000s failed to address. Previous efforts struggled with issues surrounding size, temperature sensitivity, and electronic noise suppression.

In contrast, MRead’s breakthrough design offers a compact and portable solution. The device resembles conventional gold prospecting tools and costs between A$30,000 to A$40,000. Its user-friendly nature allows operators to become proficient with only 30 minutes of training, compared to the standard four weeks required for traditional equipment.

James Cowan, CEO of the Halo Trust, emphasized the urgent need for faster, safer, and smarter mine clearance technology. With ongoing conflicts and deteriorating safety conditions in regions such as Ukraine, Cowan believes this innovation could play a crucial role in saving lives. Halo Trust’s mission to create a mine-free world aligns with the capabilities offered by this groundbreaking detector.

Codan (ASX:CDA), through its Minelab division, has provided significant support for the technology. The company’s involvement showcases the growing role of private sector funding in advancing global mine detection efforts. Despite initial hesitancy from venture capital firms over military applications, Codan’s backing has enabled MRead to move forward with plans for mass production by 2026.

With its innovative handheld technology, MRead offers a practical solution to address landmine contamination more effectively. The device enhances safety for operators and communities while significantly reducing the time required for mine clearance. As production scales up, this technology is set to transform global efforts to mitigate the dangers posed by landmines, especially in heavily affected regions.
