Highlights:

  • Newmont implements a private 5G network at its Cadia Copper-Gold Mine to support teleremote dozing

  • Ericsson’s 5G solution replaces Wi-Fi to ensure greater reliability and extended range

  • The upgraded network supports full fleet connectivity and improved worker safety

Newmont, a major global mining entity, has adopted advanced digital infrastructure at its Cadia Copper-Gold Mine in New South Wales. The company has deployed a private 5G network to support teleremote dozing activities, enhancing operational efficiency and workplace safety within its surface mining segment. This development represents a shift toward high-capacity, low-latency communications technologies in the mining sector.

Limitations of Wi-Fi Prompt Network Overhaul
Previously, the Cadia mine relied on an on-site Wi-Fi setup for machine connectivity. However, the system exhibited limitations, including connectivity restrictions for more than a couple of machines and range limitations that made it unsuitable for expansive operations. The instability of the Wi-Fi led to frequent service interruptions, with lengthy periods of downtime during shifts, impacting productivity and requiring extensive troubleshooting efforts.

Ericsson’s Private 5G Solution Enables Reliable Remote Control
To overcome these constraints, Newmont deployed Ericsson’s Private 5G network, marking its first use of this technology in remote dozing at surface mining sites. The network delivers high throughput and stable connectivity, enabling the remote operation of multiple dozers across extended distances within the mine. This capability is particularly advantageous in areas where conventional wireless technologies fall short in performance and reliability.

Efficient Spectrum Use and Scalable Coverage
Ericsson’s Private 5G infrastructure is designed to function effectively in environments with limited spectrum availability. According to the company, the system enables enterprises to use advanced control technologies such as video-based systems and computer vision without deploying excessive physical infrastructure. This streamlined approach helps reduce complexity in network management while maintaining high performance standards.

Expanded Equipment Connectivity Across Greater Distances
With the new network in place, Newmont can operate its entire fleet of dozers across the full span of its tailings construction site. The implementation allows for high-speed uplink communications and facilitates remote operations from a central control point. This capability supports improved earthmoving output during each shift and offers scalability for future equipment needs.

Safety and Performance Drive Network Deployment
Chris Twaddle, Newmont’s Director of Process Control, Networks and Operational Cellular, indicated that the private 5G deployment meets the company’s need for a reliable, wide-coverage solution. The network's performance characteristics help ensure safer working conditions for personnel by enabling operators to manage heavy machinery from protected environments, thereby reducing on-site exposure to operational hazards.

Industrial Application of 5G in Mining Operations
The implementation at Cadia highlights how 5G technology is increasingly being adopted in industrial applications, particularly in resource-intensive sectors. Mining operations, which often take place in remote or expansive environments, benefit significantly from private network capabilities that offer both control and scalability without reliance on broader public infrastructure.
