Japan partners with IQM for industrialising quantum computing.
AIST and IQM focus on hardware development and algorithms.
Efforts align with Japan’s quantum roadmap for the next decade.
Quantum Technology Collaboration in Japan, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has formalised a partnership with IQM Quantum Computers (HQ: Finland) to propel the development of quantum computing. The collaboration with Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) aims to enhance quantum hardware, optimise algorithms, and improve error mitigation techniques. This move aligns with Japan’s ambitions to lead in quantum encryption technology and industrial applications by the decade's end.
The focus of the agreement is to deliver full-stack quantum computers, creating a framework to integrate advanced quantum capabilities across sectors. By combining AIST's research expertise with IQM's technical prowess, the partnership seeks to industrialise quantum computing efficiently.
Aligning with Japan’s Quantum Ambitions
Japan’s government has placed significant emphasis on quantum research, setting a target to develop robust quantum encryption technology by 2030. Leading global firms such as IBM (NYSE:IBM) and Toshiba (TYO:6502) have been pivotal in this effort. Last year, the University of Tokyo collaborated with IBM and the University of Chicago in a high-profile partnership to develop a 100,000-qubit quantum-centric supercomputer. This project, valued at approximately $100 million, represents a critical milestone in advancing quantum technology and fostering innovation.
Professor Murao Mio, a quantum information theory expert at the University of Tokyo, emphasized the transformative impact of these advancements, stating, “Researchers and students are increasingly inclined to develop practical applications for quantum computers as the technology matures.”
IQM’s Contribution to Japan’s Vision
IQM Quantum Computers is now integral to Japan’s 10-year quantum roadmap. The recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) between AIST and IQM highlights their shared commitment to scientific excellence and nurturing talent. Mikko Välimäki, co-CEO of IQM, expressed enthusiasm about aligning their development initiatives with Japan’s strategic goals, ensuring that cutting-edge technological advancements continue to thrive within the country.
This partnership is poised to bolster Japan’s position in the global quantum race while fostering innovation across industries such as healthcare, cybersecurity, and manufacturing. By leveraging this collaboration, Japan aims to integrate quantum technology into practical applications, transforming industries and enabling future-ready solutions.
