  • Overheating battery risk linked to models sold between 2020–2023
  • Firmware update rolled out to fix potential thermal issues

Fitbit, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL), has initiated a safety recall in Australia for its popular smartwatch models—Sense and Versa 3—following reports that overheating batteries could pose a burn hazard to users. The recall affects specific units sold between August 1, 2020, and September 30, 2023, as identified by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The potential safety issue arises from thermal risks linked to the battery. In response, Fitbit has rolled out a firmware update designed to improve the battery management system and prevent overheating. Importantly, consumers are not required to return their devices to apply the update. The ACCC confirmed that the update is being delivered remotely, making the process easier for affected users.

To verify if their smartwatch is included in the recall, consumers can access an online form via Fitbit’s website. This tool allows users to check their device’s eligibility for the firmware update and confirm if it has already been successfully installed. It’s important to note that not all units within the specified date range are affected, and those outside the risk category will continue to function normally regardless of whether the update is applied.

The ACCC emphasized that if the problem persists or the device does not meet the expectations outlined by Australian Consumer Law, consumers may be entitled to a refund or a replacement. Fitbit has also mentioned the possibility of additional remedies for impacted users, referred to as “appeasement,” though further details on this remain limited.

Once the firmware update is installed, users can continue to use their smartwatches without interruption. Fitbit has reassured customers that the update will not impact performance on devices that are unaffected by the overheating risk.

This development brings attention to the growing importance of safety and software reliability in the wearable tech market. With wearable devices becoming a daily necessity for many consumers, companies like Fitbit must ensure robust post-sale support and transparent communication during product safety events. The recall serves as a reminder of the critical role that firmware updates can play in maintaining the functionality and safety of modern tech products.
