Highlights

  • Vital Chemical trials compostable netting for major infrastructure projects
  • Innovation aims to enhance soil stabilisation and vegetation growth
  • Product offers sustainable alternative to traditional erosion control materials

Queensland-based environmental solutions provider Vital Chemical has initiated a large-scale trial of its compostable netting product, Vital Eco-Nett, on the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace (M12RT). The initiative focuses on enhancing revegetation efforts and reducing environmental impact across infrastructure and construction sites.

While not part of the ASX 200, the company’s innovative approach reflects the increasing global demand for sustainable infrastructure solutions. The trial involves installing the netting in an open drain to support soil stabilisation and encourage plant growth, offering a forward-looking approach to erosion control.

Sustainable Design Meets Practical Application

Vital Eco-Nett is crafted from thermoplastic starch, biodegradable polyesters, and natural softening agents. Both the mesh and its anchor pins are fully compostable, breaking down naturally in the presence of soil microbes, moisture, and fungi. This ensures the product not only supports vegetation during its operational life but also integrates seamlessly into the natural environment afterward.

The product’s design allows for the inclusion of soil conditioners and slow-release nutrients within the netting, enhancing plant establishment while gradually decomposing. This dual function means it can stabilise the landscape while nourishing it, creating a balanced ecological solution.

Setting a New Standard in Erosion Control

Vital Chemical (Private) has built a reputation for tackling some of Australia’s most challenging terrains, from remote mining operations to large-scale highway upgrades. Alongside Vital Eco-Nett, the company’s suite of sustainable solutions includes advanced hydroseeding systems, soil stabilisation products, and biodegradable erosion control mats.

The current trial will be monitored over several years to evaluate performance, durability, and environmental compatibility. If successful, the netting could redefine industry practices for erosion management, reducing reliance on imported or synthetic materials that linger in the environment.

By advancing products like Vital Eco-Nett, Vital Chemical continues to contribute to the shift toward environmentally responsible construction and mining practices, reinforcing its role in shaping a greener future for land rehabilitation.
