- Dr. Stephen J. Piercey joins Canstar’s technical and advisory board
- Brings deep expertise in VMS exploration across Newfoundland
- Supports new C$11.5M JV in high-grade Buchans-Mary March corridor
Canstar Resources (V:ROX) has announced the appointment of Dr. Stephen J. Piercey to its technical and advisory board, reinforcing its commitment to scientific exploration in one of Canada's most promising mineral belts. This move strengthens the company’s technical bench as it accelerates efforts within the volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) districts of Newfoundland, notably through its newly announced joint venture with VMS Mining Corporation.
The strategic collaboration between Canstar and VMS Mining is underpinned by a C$11.5 million joint venture targeting underexplored regions of the Buchans-Mary March corridor—an area renowned for hosting some of the world’s highest-grade polymetallic mineralisation. Dr. Piercey’s involvement is expected to be a critical asset to the venture’s success, offering deep geological insight and academic expertise.
With decades of experience in VMS-related mineral systems, particularly within the Newfoundland Appalachians, Dr. Piercey has been widely acknowledged as a leader in economic geology. His proficiency spans lithostratigraphy, volcanology, hydrothermal alteration, and geochemistry. He applies a multi-disciplinary approach that combines fieldwork with advanced petrographic and lithogeochemical analyses—an ideal match for Canstar’s exploration ethos.
Dr. Piercey currently serves as a University Research Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he heads the Piercey Research Group. Over his career, he has published more than 100 peer-reviewed studies, contributed to several technical reports, and mentored over 50 graduate and postdoctoral researchers. His prior role as the NSERC-Altius Industrial Research Chair in Mineral Deposits further highlights his academic and industry standing.
The appointment also aligns with a broader trend of data-centric mineral exploration strategies, increasingly relevant as companies position themselves for growth amid a dynamic commodities market. Such moves reflect the kind of rigorous, research-backed direction that investors following the ASX200 index are keenly watching—especially as mineral and resource firms expand into historically underexplored territories.
Canstar’s partnership with VMS Mining and its bolstered leadership team aims to unlock deeper geological potential within the Buchans region, further supported by a focused strategy of leveraging both academic and technical excellence. Dr. Piercey’s involvement is set to play a pivotal role as the company accelerates its exploration roadmap in 2025 and beyond.
