In a significant shift in career, former Australian Defence Force (ADF) Chief Angus Campbell has been named Australia's new Ambassador to Belgium, a key diplomatic post with high importance given the current geopolitical climate. The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, furthering Australia’s long-term objectives to enhance its role on the global stage.

Campbell served as the ADF Chief until July 2024, concluding six years of leadership that saw significant challenges and controversies. He initially ascended to the position of Chief of Army in 2015, appointed by then-Prime Minister Tony Abbott, before being promoted to Chief of the Defence Force in 2018. His time in the role coincided with some of the most intense investigations in the history of Australia’s military operations, notably the Brereton Inquiry, which revealed disturbing allegations against elite Australian soldiers during the War in Afghanistan. The inquiry, published in 2020, presented evidence of 39 murders by Australian special forces.

In response to the inquiry's findings, Campbell disbanded the notorious 2 Squadron of the Special Air Service Regiment and worked to foster transparency within the military's operational culture. However, his involvement in handling the aftermath of the inquiry brought both praise for accountability and criticism, including calls for further investigations into the chain of command. Despite this, Campbell remained a prominent figure within Australia’s national defense policies, particularly for his management of Australia's response to international threats.

His track record of managing high-stakes operations also saw Campbell overseeing Operation Sovereign Borders, which focused on curbing unauthorized boat arrivals. During this period, he was frequently in communication with the Australian government on immigration issues, showing his capacity for tough decision-making.

Moving to a diplomatic role, Campbell’s new position will leverage his experience to support the strengthening of Australia’s relationship with NATO, particularly in fostering peace and security cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions. Foreign Minister Wong praised his appointment, noting his immense value in advancing Australia’s strategic objectives in Europe and beyond.

Campbell’s transition from military leadership to diplomatic service exemplifies his versatility, with his background providing a unique perspective on international security matters. For Australia, his appointment is expected to build upon existing defense partnerships while deepening ties with countries in Europe and beyond.

Australia’s growing engagement with NATO and its strategic interests are essential as geopolitical landscapes in both the Indo-Pacific and Europe continue to evolve. The appointment of Campbell marks an important chapter for Australia in international diplomacy, just as companies like (ASX:XRO) and (ASX:CSL) continue to amplify their international relations.
