Altech (ASX: ATC) Unveils CERENERGY Prototype, Exceeds Early Test Expectations

Altech Batteries Ltd (ASX:ATC) has successfully completed its first prototype of the CERENERGY Sodium Chloride Solid State (SCSS) Battery, marking a significant milestone in the company’s journey toward developing advanced energy storage solutions. The CERENERGY® 60 KWh prototype is currently operational and undergoing daily testing at a dedicated battery test station in Germany. This marks an essential step for Altech as it moves toward commercial production and potential large-scale adoption of this next-generation battery technology. 

The prototype has been installed at the test laboratory of Altech's joint venture partner, Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTs), located in Dresden, Germany. A custom-built battery test station has been constructed to evaluate the performance of the CERENERGY® battery under real-world conditions. Early results have been promising, with the prototype already surpassing initial performance expectations. One of the key performance highlights has been its thermal stability, a critical component for high-capacity energy storage systems, especially those intended for large-scale industrial applications. 

The testing process is structured to subject the CERENERGY® battery to daily charging and discharging cycles, which allows for an in-depth assessment of its efficiency, stability, and long-term reliability. This continuous evaluation is aimed at ensuring the battery meets the rigorous demands of modern energy systems. 

The potential impact of this technology lies in its distinct advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries. Using common table salt as a primary resource, the CERENERGY® battery avoids the need for increasingly scarce and expensive materials like lithium, cobalt, copper, graphite, and manganese. Moreover, it can operate across a wide temperature range, a feature that could make it particularly useful in varying environmental conditions where energy storage reliability is paramount. 

Another key differentiator is the expected lifespan of the CERENERGY® battery. The prototype is projected to have a service life of 15 years, which is about double the lifespan of conventional lithium-ion batteries. This enhanced longevity could significantly reduce the total cost of ownership for large-scale energy storage systems, making it an attractive alternative in industrial applications. 

With the prototype now operational and exceeding expectations, Altech is well-positioned to move forward with its plans for large-scale production. The next significant development step will be the construction of the first 120MWh production facility. This plant will be critical to meeting growing demand for advanced energy storage solutions, particularly as global industries shift toward renewable energy and seek more sustainable, long-term energy storage options. 

Altech has already secured a Letter of Intent (LOI) for an initial offtake agreement, totaling 30MWh, with Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park, a key industrial zone in Germany. This initial commitment suggests strong interest in the CERENERGY® battery and could lead to further commercial agreements as Altech continues to refine and demonstrate the technology. 

The ongoing tests with the CERENERGY® 60kWh battery prototype are expected to provide valuable performance data, further solidifying the battery's capabilities and its market potential. This data will be crucial not only for technical validation but also for securing additional offtake agreements and financing for the planned production facility. 

The positive performance results from the battery test station could act as a catalyst for more substantial commercial interest and investment, propelling Altech’s ambition to become a key player in the global energy storage market.
