Highlights

  • Second batch of lithium batteries tested met battery-grade specifications.
  • The testwork indicates that with the Bécancour Lithium Refinery will have robust capability.
  • The results demonstrate the validity of the process design when processing multiple types of spodumene feedstock sourced globally.

Lithium Universe Limited (ASX: LU7) has reported significant progress in the ongoing testwork program, demonstrating  the production of battery-grade lithium carbonate (less than 99.5% Li2O3) from various spodumene concentrates using the Bécancour Lithium Refinery design.

Recently, the company’s key board members and CEO toured the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) metallurgical testing site at the Linyi University Lithium Research Centre. The testwork program of multiple spodumene ores is a crucial aspect of the DFS being undertaken by Hatch Ltd for the Bécancour Lithium Refinery.

The testing of second batch of lithium batteries at the centre has been concluded. The results indicate that stringent battery-grade specifications have been met.

More

The multi-purpose refinery is aimed at producing battery-grade lithium carbonate, with a designed production capacity of 16,000 metric tons per annum, based on an assumed spodumene feed grade of approximately 5.5% Li2O.

As part of the testwork, spodumene samples in range of 5.0% to 6.0% Li2O with varying particle sizes are undergoing comprehensive testing.

The company aims to establish a downstream standalone lithium refinery with the potential to process spodumene feedstock sourced from anywhere across the globe.

Samples sourced from Africa, Australia and Brazil are under process testing at Linyi. The planned refinery will be equipped to effectively handle spodumene feedstock sourced from various locations across the globe. This versatility would ensure the resilience and flexibility of the lithium production process, providing alternatives in spodumene feedstock as the Canadian supply chain progresses.

The spodumene samples not only display distinct particle size but also include different levels of impurities such as iron, calcium and magnesium.

The test work undertaken so far outlines that refinery design can manage different kinds of spodumene concentrate with ease.

LU7 shares traded at AU$0.019 apiece at the time of writing on 15 May 2024.
