How does sunlight damage your skin?

Sunlight helps our skin to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is an important component of bone formation. However, prolonged exposure to strong sunlight has its own downside as well. The ultraviolet light from the sun can damage the skin.

The outer layer of our skin contains a pigment known as melanin. It safeguards the skin from harmful rays. People, particularly those with lesser melanin, should protect themselves from extreme sunlight. It is generally advisable to avoid the sun between 10 am and 4 pm. Frequent exposure to UV rays over many years is also the major cause of skin cancer.

High energy UV rays are a form of ionising radiation that can damage the DNA in cells leading to skin cancer. UVC rays have the highest energy, followed by UVB and UVA rays.
