Nominations close soon for the WA Government’s Resources Sector Awards for Excellence
Awards celebrate achievements in environmental innovation and community partnerships
ASX-listed miners including ASX:BHP, ASX:ILU, ASX:SFR, and ASX:WDS among previous award recipients
The resources sector in Western Australia continues to receive recognition through the annual Resources Sector Awards for Excellence, hosted by the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS). This initiative shines a light on achievements within the mining and energy industries, including companies listed on the asx 200 such as Iluka Resources (ASX:ILU), Sandfire Resources (ASX:SFR), and BHP (ASX:BHP), which have previously earned accolades for their innovative and community-focused projects.
This year’s ceremony, set for October, will again recognise outstanding contributions to sustainability and regional development. Nominations are set to close on Friday 30 May.
Golden Gecko Award Focuses on Environmental Innovation
The Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence acknowledges those in the sector who deliver measurable environmental outcomes through novel methods. Honourees from past years include Iluka Resources (ASX:ILU) for its Flora Restorer program, which fosters ecological restoration through native seed integration, and Sandfire Resources (ASX:SFR) for implementing renewable technologies through the DeGrussa Solar Project.
Additionally, the collaboration between Goldfields Australia (JSE:GFI) and EDL on the Agnew Hybrid Renewable Project highlighted the growing importance of energy innovation within the mining sector. These projects underscore the increasing emphasis on environmental responsibility across Australia’s resource operations.
Community Partnership Awards Emphasise Social Collaboration
The Community Partnership Awards aim to recognise alliances between resources sector organisations and community groups that deliver social outcomes. Past recipients include Ngurra Kujungka and Newcrest Mining, which has since integrated with Newmont (NYSE:NEM), for their support of local recreational programs.
Another awarded initiative, the Woombooriny Amboon Angarriya Partnership, was led by Save the Children in collaboration with Woodside Energy (ASX:WDS), offering cultural and youth engagement programs. BHP (ASX:BHP), one of the largest constituents of the ASX 200, was acknowledged for supporting the Healthy Food for All Pilbara Regional Strategy in conjunction with Foodbank WA.
These projects exemplify how collaboration between large-scale resource companies and regional organisations can drive inclusive, community-led outcomes.
Award Process Encourages Diverse Recognition
Unlike traditional awards, the Resources Sector Awards for Excellence do not operate under direct competition. All nominations are assessed individually, and multiple awards may be granted within each category. This approach allows a broader range of contributions to be celebrated, whether in technical innovation or community capacity building.
The open format encourages organisations of all sizes across the sector to participate, recognising achievements from large ASX-listed miners to smaller, regionally active entities.
Sector Representation from Major Index Participants
Past recognitions reflect the involvement of prominent mining and energy firms within Western Australia, many of which feature on the ASX 200. Companies such as BHP (ASX:BHP), Iluka Resources (ASX:ILU), Sandfire Resources (ASX:SFR), and Woodside Energy (ASX:WDS) have demonstrated leadership in sustainability and social responsibility.
With nominations closing soon, the awards offer an occasion for the sector to highlight projects that align operational success with environmental care and community development. The awards ceremony will be held later this year, continuing a longstanding tradition of spotlighting excellence within Western Australia’s dynamic resources landscape.
