Highlights

  • Stawell Gold Mine partners with RCT to automate newly acquired underground loaders

  • Integration supports mixed OEM fleet using RCT’s AutoNav platform

  • Deployment enhances operator productivity and mining efficiency at the historic site

The Stawell Gold Mine, situated within Victoria’s historically rich Stawell district, is advancing its automation capabilities by partnering with RCT – Powered by Epiroc. This development further embeds smart mining practices into Australia's gold mining landscape. Stawell Gold Mines (SGM), the site’s operator, is a privately held entity under Arete Capital Partners. The mine forms part of the All Ordinaries index through its relevance in the national resource infrastructure.

SGM continues to modernise its underground operations, drawing on RCT’s multi-decade automation expertise to improve safety and operational throughput.

Integration of Hybrid Loaders and Existing Fleet

The recent addition of CAT 2900XE diesel-electric underground loaders prompted SGM to turn once again to RCT for automation compatibility. These new units are being seamlessly integrated into the existing fleet of Epiroc ST18S loaders, already outfitted with RCT’s AutoNav technology. This alignment ensures a consistent interface across mixed original equipment manufacturer (OEM) machines.

According to RCT’s Brisbane Branch Manager Owen Perrott, the agnostic approach of RCT’s solutions was central to this deployment. The existing AutoNav cabins located both above and below ground will remain the central control hubs for all equipment.

Productivity Gains Through Centralised Control Systems

Centralising control minimises the need for relocating operator stations around the underground worksite. This fixed setup supports uninterrupted workflows and stable operational continuity. In many mining environments, running a mixed OEM fleet is uncommon, making Stawell’s approach distinctive within the sector.

Perrott explained that maintaining cohesive automation systems across different OEMs removes the need for additional training or software adaptations, keeping operations streamlined.

First-Time Deployment on Hybrid CAT Loaders

RCT’s Brisbane division achieved a technical milestone by automating the CAT 2900XE model for the first time using its AutoNav system. The project disproves previous assumptions within the mining industry that hybrid machines could not be effectively automated.

Perrott added that hearing such automation wasn’t feasible only motivated the RCT team further to deliver an efficient solution, marking a notable achievement in hybrid loader automation for underground applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What technology is used to automate the loaders at Stawell Gold Mine?
RCT’s AutoNav system is being used to automate the CAT 2900XE and Epiroc ST18S loaders at the mine.
  • Why is Stawell’s mixed OEM fleet considered unique?
Most underground mines standardise their loader brands, while Stawell operates both CAT and Epiroc units under a unified automation platform.
  • What benefit does RCT’s centralised cabin system provide?
It allows consistent machine control without relocating operator stations, maintaining productivity throughout the mining cycle.
