Highlights

  • Meteoric Resources and MTM Critical Metals signed a memorandum of understanding for downstream processing collaboration

  • The agreement centers on upgrading mixed rare earth carbonate from Brazil using Flash Joule Heating technology

  • Both ASX-listed firms aim to advance refining strategies for high-value rare earths

Meteoric Resources (ASX:MEI), a constituent of the ASX 200, and MTM Critical Metals (ASX:MTM), which trades on the All Ordinaries, have entered a non-binding memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing downstream processing of mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC) from the Caldeira Rare Earth Project located in Brazil.

The joint initiative is positioned within the rare earth exploration and processing sector, reflecting the increasing focus on critical mineral supply chains and value-added production pathways.

Focus on Flash Joule Heating Technology

Central to the collaboration is the deployment of MTM’s proprietary Flash Joule Heating (FJH) technology. This method is designed to convert MREC into rare earth chloride intermediates, targeting enhanced value extraction.

The initial testwork on Meteoric’s material using FJH technology demonstrated the capability to isolate high-value rare earth elements such as neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium. According to MTM, the method effectively eliminated a significant portion of less valuable components in a single flash, with expectations of better outcomes in future multi-flash iterations.

Technical and Commercial Evaluation Planned

Both companies will conduct a joint evaluation of the technical and commercial aspects of applying FJH to Meteoric’s rare earth feedstock. This includes assessing how the technology integrates with Meteoric’s broader refining strategy, and examining possible arrangements for downstream refining partnerships.

The 12-month agreement establishes a framework for technical cooperation, encompassing shared engineering efforts and mutual access to processing data. During this period, MTM has agreed not to license or apply its FJH technology to other ionic clay rare earth projects in Brazil without written consent from Meteoric.

Resource Background and Company Roles

Meteoric Resources, which is focused on the Caldeira Rare Earth Project in Brazil, has been advancing exploration and development within the rare earths domain. The Caldeira project hosts a globally recognized resource base, reflecting substantial rare earth oxide content above the defined threshold grade.

MTM Critical Metals, a dual-listed entity with management operations in Perth and Texas, is known for its work in advanced rare earth recovery and separation technologies. The company continues to innovate in refining techniques aimed at elevating the value of critical mineral resources.
