  • Lynas Rare Earths partners with JS Link for Malaysian magnet facility

  • Agreement aims to build local rare earth magnet manufacturing ecosystem

  • Project supports growing demand from energy, tech, and auto industries

Lynas Rare Earths (LYC), part of the All Ordinaries, has taken a significant step toward developing an integrated rare earth magnet supply chain in Southeast Asia. The company has entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korea-based JS to explore the creation of a neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnet manufacturing facility in Malaysia.

This initiative reflects Lynas’ broader strategy to establish a full-cycle rare earth processing and production capability, with the aim of supporting industries that rely on advanced magnetic materials for energy efficiency and performance.

Rare Earth Supply Meets Magnet Expertise

Under the terms of the MoU, Lynas will provide essential raw materials both light and heavy rare earths from its operations to support JS Link’s magnet manufacturing process. The proposed capacity plant will be situated near Lynas’ (ASX:LYC) advanced materials facility in Kuantan, Malaysia, allowing efficient coordination between material supply and manufacturing activities.

JS Link brings specialised knowledge in rare earth magnet technologies, having developed solutions for high-grade magnets used in electric motors, wind turbines, and electronic devices. Their collaboration is expected to leverage both companies’ strengths to meet global industry requirements.

With many global markets moving toward electrification and digitalisation, the demand for NdFeB magnets continues to rise, making this partnership timely and strategically significant.

Malaysia to Play Central Role in Rare Earth Magnet Production

This collaboration not only strengthens Lynas’ value chain but also enhances Malaysia’s as a regional manufacturing centre for critical materials. The location near Lynas’ existing plant means infrastructure and supply lines are already in place, reducing setup complexity and increasing operational efficiency.

Neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnets are known for their compact size and powerful magnetic force. These properties make them indispensable in compact motors, energy conversion systems, and consumer electronics. By building this facility locally, Lynas and JS Link aim to support growing market needs while reducing dependence on traditional global supply routes.

This new phase of production could enable Malaysia to play a more active role in the global transition to cleaner energy technologies and smarter devices.
