Latrobe Magnesium schedules first operations for its Victorian Demonstration Plant
Environmental and labour preparations advancing alongside commissioning activities
Revised ash supply deal and equipment pre-start checks position plant for early ramp-up
Latrobe Magnesium Ltd (ASX:LMG), a participant on the All Ordinaries index, is finalising steps to commence operations at its Stage 1 Demonstration Plant located in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria. The facility aims to showcase a proprietary technology that extracts magnesium metal and cementitious material from power station waste, aligning with circular economy goals.
The plant, expected to commence by early August, represents a milestone for the company as it transitions from project development into production mode using an environmentally conscious process.
Environmental Clearance and EPA Licence Progress
The company confirmed that it has lodged all relevant documentation with the Victorian Environmental Protection Authority. While approval timelines experienced initial delays attributed to seasonal capacity constraints within the regulator, the application has since been given priority status. A draft amended licence is anticipated for review shortly.
Company executives stated that all conditions for permit advancement have been met and emphasised their commitment to starting operations along a defined project timeline.
Workforce Planning and Recruitment Response
Latrobe Magnesium has shifted to direct workforce recruitment after an Enterprise Agreement could not be concluded with local unions. A national labour provider has been engaged, and the company reports strong local interest in open roles. Contractors familiar with the site are supporting hiring and onboarding processes.
Recruitment continues for senior plant positions including process engineers and operations managers, while many members of the original management team have resumed their roles. Onboarding will be integrated with safety training and equipment orientation.
Ash Supply Agreement and Site Readiness Measures
A revised ash supply agreement with EnergyAustralia has been finalised, providing a consistent input source for magnesium production. Contractor RTL Mining and Earthworks has been mobilised to support pre-operational site preparations, including ash stockpile development.
Technical and mechanical commissioning efforts are underway. Pre-start inspections, system validations, and reagent inventory checks have been performed across the facility. Operational digital systems have also been activated to manage plant performance and maintenance planning.
Technical Commissioning and Strategic Development Path
Latrobe confirmed that technical vendors Tenova and Rockwell Automation will conduct on-site commissioning activities this week. Final preparations of operational manuals and procedural documentation are being completed in collaboration with health and safety teams.
To support its transition to magnesium output, Latrobe is concurrently progressing non-dilutive funding strategies. The company remains positioned to meet start-up requirements through existing financial resources.
