Queensland Government allocates community project funding across the CopperString energy corridor
Powerlink to deliver local benefits through strategic stakeholder collaboration
New transmission infrastructure to link North West Minerals Province with national energy grid
The Queensland Government’s commitment to regional energy infrastructure development has taken another major step with fresh funding dedicated to projects under the CopperString initiative. CopperString, led by Powerlink, will deliver a new transmission link to connect North West Queensland’s energy potential to the National Electricity Market. The project aligns with broader strategies shaping the state's energy sector, impacting participants in the ASX 200 and All Ordinaries indices.
The most recent State Budget outlines plans to fund community infrastructure along the transmission route, delivering both energy and social benefits for communities across northern and inland regions.
Powerlink to Facilitate Regional Benefits Along Transmission Corridor
Under Powerlink’s Community Legacy Framework, funding will be channelled into housing, accommodation, and regional development initiatives. Oversight will be managed by the Regional Reference Group in collaboration with the Office of the Coordinator-General to ensure alignment with local priorities.
The announcement reinforces the project’s community focus. Engagements with mayors, traditional custodians, and industry representatives are set to shape the rollout of these initiatives, aiming to maximise long-term regional impact beyond core energy transmission goals.
Government Endorsement Strengthens Delivery Timeline
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli underscored the importance of regional advancement through infrastructure projects. Speaking from Townsville, he expressed support for investments that drive broader social and economic value, describing the CopperString expansion as a channel to attract further commitments to northern communities.
Energy Minister David Janetzki highlighted the scale of this year’s budget allocation to CopperString as a turning point for the initiative. He noted that actual funding deployment marks a shift from planning to execution, affirming the project’s readiness for construction and delivery milestones across both eastern and western links.
CopperString 2032 to Unlock Minerals and Renewable Zones
CopperString 2032 includes approximately 840 kilometres of high-voltage transmission lines stretching from Mount Isa to near Townsville. This connection will allow major resource hubs like the North West Minerals Province to export power into the National Electricity Market for the first time.
Works are also underway at the Hughenden Hub, an infrastructure node expected to accelerate the renewable energy integration in Flinders. The hub is positioned to support growth across the clean energy sector while facilitating energy distribution to broader regions through the grid.
