China intends to hasten the launch of rare earth (RE) metals futures contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE).

  • However, the type of rare earth metals to be listed first is yet to be disclosed by the exchange.
  • China currently holds dominance in the rare earth space and could exploit the position in the events of no deal with the United States.
  • SHFE has been considering a potential futures contract with China's RE industry since 2014.
