ABS Provides Update on Overseas Arrivals & Departures During January 2020

ABS provide January 2020 trend estimates for short-term trips and reported an increase in the arrival of overseas visitors by 0.1% since the prior month to 788,900 trips. Further, the residents of Australia returning from abroad soared 0.4% since the last month to 969,400 trips.

The ABS has undertaken the analysis for the month of January 2020 in order to access the changes in the visitor’s arrival due to COVID-19, and from 1 February 2020 placed a travel restriction on those who are travelling to Australia from Mainland China.

On a trend basis, there has been a decline in the number of visitors from China in January 2020 by 5.5% as compared to January 2019.
