Highlights:

  • DTEK has partnered with Fluence Energy (NASDAQ:FLNC) to develop Ukraine's first large-scale battery-based energy storage portfolio.
  • The project includes six storage sites with a combined capacity of 200 MW and 400 MWh of dispatchable energy.
  • Completion is expected by October 2025, with the system aimed at stabilizing Ukraine's power grid.

Ukraine's energy sector is undergoing a transformation with a significant new development. DTEK has chosen Fluence Energy to deliver the country's first large-scale battery-based energy storage portfolio. This project is set to become the largest operational energy storage network in Eastern Europe.

Scope of the Project

The project includes the construction of six energy storage sites across Ukraine. These sites will collectively provide a capacity of 200 MW and 400 MWh of dispatchable energy. The system will have the capacity to supply energy to around 600,000 homes. The storage plants will have capacities between 20 MW and 50 MW, designed to offer flexibility across the country. The energy storage system is intended to provide essential services to the grid, such as frequency and power balancing, to improve overall stability.

Grid Stabilization Benefits

The energy storage system will play a vital role in stabilizing Ukraine's power grid. With challenges in maintaining a steady power supply, especially during times of conflict, the technology used in these plants will allow for rapid responses to grid fluctuations. The systems will have millisecond response times, ensuring faster recovery after power outages and enhancing grid reliability.

Project Timeline and Training Plans

The energy storage portfolio is expected to be completed by October 2025. Upon completion, DTEK staff will undergo training from Fluence to become certified partners. This training will cover aspects such as installation, commissioning, and the ongoing maintenance of the systems, ensuring that the energy storage network operates effectively in the long term.

Strategic Importance

This project is part of DTEK’s broader efforts to enhance power supply in Ukraine, especially under difficult conditions. The advanced storage systems will help ensure that the grid remains resilient and capable of meeting demand, even during challenging times. Through the partnership with Fluence Energy, DTEK aims to contribute to the development of a more reliable and secure energy infrastructure for Ukraine.
