Apple Inc is experiencing strong initial demand for its recently launched iPhone 16 units, which officially became available this past weekend. According to a research note from Wedbush, early checks indicate significant global interest in this upgrade cycle, which could lead to considerable growth in unit sales starting in the December quarter.

Strong Initial Demand and Future Projections

Wedbush analysts forecast that Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL)’s iPhone 16 unit sales could see high single-digit increases, with the possibility of reaching double-digit growth compared to prior models. The firm highlights that over 300 million of the 1.5 billion iPhone users have not upgraded their devices in the last four years, suggesting a substantial market for new sales. Supply chain information from Asia indicates that the initial launch of the iPhone 16 could surpass 90 million units, representing an increase of approximately 8 to 10 million units from the iPhone 15.

The report emphasizes the potential for an Artificial Intelligence AI-driven "supercycle" that may allow Apple to break its historical sales records for iPhones in a year. Analysts predict that Apple could sell more than 240 million iPhone units in fiscal year 2025, driven by the integration of "Apple Intelligence" features, which are expected to enhance user experience and engagement.

Market Dynamics in China

China remains a critical component of Apple’s growth strategy. Wedbush anticipates that partnerships focused on large language models (LLMs), particularly with Baidu, will bolster Apple's AI capabilities in this key market. The partnership with OpenAI is also highlighted as a significant development, enabling the launch of an advanced personal assistant powered by Apple’s new A18 chip.

Despite competitive pressures from Huawei's latest smartphone offerings, Apple continues to focus on upgrades within its extensive installed user base in China. Wedbush estimates that iPhone sales in the region could reach approximately 50 million units in fiscal year 2025, reflecting steady double-digit growth despite recent challenges.

The Role of Apple Intelligence

Wedbush underscores the importance of "Apple Intelligence" as a key driver of future growth. The firm posits that more than 20% of the global consumer population is likely to engage with AI through Apple devices in the coming years. Developers are expected to play a significant role in this transformation by creating a variety of generative AI-driven applications within the next six to nine months, which will be integral to Apple's technology ecosystem.

Although some observers have noted a lack of immediate AI features, Wedbush remains confident in Apple's phased rollout strategy, which is anticipated to yield strong results during the holiday season and into the following year. This momentum is projected to contribute to a potential market capitalization of $4 trillion for Apple by 2025.

The launch of the iPhone 16 appears to set the stage for robust sales growth, driven by the integration of advanced AI features and a strategic focus on key markets, particularly in China. As Apple continues to navigate competitive pressures and capitalize on emerging technologies, the company’s future performance will be closely watched.
