Northvolt, the Swedish battery manufacturing giant, announced on Wednesday that the head of its flagship factory, Northvolt Ett, has stepped down with immediate effect.
This leadership change comes on the heels of significant financial challenges, including a plan to reduce its workforce by 25% as part of a broader cost-cutting strategy.
Mark Duchesne, CEO of Northvolt Ett, has been replaced temporarily by Angéline J. Bilodeau, the company’s vice president of operations in North America.
Bilodeau will serve as interim CEO until the end of the year while Northvolt searches for a permanent successor, according to a company statement.
Northvolt facing significant financial difficulties
Northvolt, based in Stockholm, is Europe’s leading homegrown producer of lithium-ion batteries, primarily serving the electric vehicle industry.
The company has established partnerships with major automakers such as Volkswagen and Volvo.
Despite its prominent role in the EV supply chain, Northvolt has been facing significant financial difficulties.
In a company update released on September 23, Northvolt revealed that it had begun scaling back its operations in Sweden.
This decision followed an internal strategic review aimed at prioritizing large-scale production at Northvolt Ett, the company’s primary gigafactory.
Northvolt to cut 1,600 jobs
As part of this restructuring, Northvolt announced plans to cut 1,600 jobs in Sweden.
Along with these layoffs, Northvolt suspended its ambitious expansion plans for Northvolt Ett, which were initially expected to add 30-gigawatt hours of cell manufacturing capacity annually.
The suspension of the expansion project led to a Northvolt Ett subsidiary filing for bankruptcy on Tuesday, further highlighting the company’s deepening financial strain.
In a separate but related development, Swedish automaker Volvo Cars also announced a management shakeup on Wednesday.
Deputy CEO Björn Annwall will be stepping down as part of the company’s reorganization.
This comes shortly after Volvo abandoned its short-term goal of exclusively selling electric vehicles, citing shifting market conditions and slowing demand as reasons for adopting a more flexible approach.
With Northvolt’s leadership changes, cost-cutting measures, and the broader challenges facing the EV industry, the company is now at a critical juncture as it seeks to stabilize operations and secure its position in Europe’s competitive battery manufacturing landscape.
