The Western Australian government invests AU$1.28 billion in health systems after 2021-2022 review.

The additional funding assigns AU$398 million to prepare WA for COVID-19 as state plans to reopen its borders.

Western Australian (WA) government is readying itself for a safe transition to live with COVID-19. After the mid-year review, WA Premier Mark McGowan has injected a further AU$1.28 billion into the state’s health and mental health systems.

How much do WA health systems have now?

Combined with earlier AU$1.9 billion investment in its September State Budget, the WA government has delivered a record AU$3.2 billion for its health and mental health systems.
The Investment increase is the highest ever and boosts WA's capacity to prepare for ongoing COVID-19.
The funding includes AU$416 million to expand WA hospital capacities with additional 270 beds.
This would include a mix of modular and other beds across a range of hospitals and ICUs, supported by extra nurses and doctors.
Around 1,200 more graduate nurses are expected to be employed in 2022 in the state’s health systems.
A total of new 530 beds are to be bought online in the next 12 months, which makes the capacity equal to a new tertiary hospital.
Furthermore, AU$920 million have been assigned for COVID-19 relief and recovery measures.
Since onset of the pandemic WA government has thus made a total investment of AU$10 billion till now.

In addition, AU$17.6 million has been allocated to free up existing hospital beds for long-stay and elderly patients, and for a hospital-to-home transition of patients under the National Disability Insurance Scheme services.

WA’s road ahead with Border reopening-

The strong financial impetus provides Western Australia the capacity to ensure that WA continues to safely transit to a COVID-19 safe destination amidst border reopening. The additional funding shall ensure health system are able to respond to the pandemic and deliver the needed health services to Western Australians.
