US Presidential election has been the most controversial election of 2020. The unrest caused by the US elections is still relentless with the defeated President Donald Trump’s continuous attempts to overturn the 3 November outcome.
Donald Trump has attacked the integrity of US elections and is not willing to admit his defeat to his Democratic incoming President-elect Joe Biden.
He has been claiming that the election race was rigged and seeking to invalidate the results through filing lawsuits and initiating recounts in many states. He has alleged widespread voter fraud without any evidence.
Biden won the US President seat
Joe Biden won by 306 electoral votes compared to Trump who got 232 votes in the Electoral College voted. The process of formalising his victory is yet to take place in weeks ahead. A majority of 270 electoral votes is required to become a President.
The state certifies Republican or Democrat slate of electors based on which candidate won that vote. Electors are party loyalists who promise to support the candidate, who earned the popular vote in their state and are allotted to states based almost on the population.

Electors would assemble on 14 December to officially select the President of US while the Congress tallies the results on 6 January.
The next Presidential term is due to begin on 20 December.
Slim chances of Trump’s win
Trump has been focusing on urging Republican state lawmakers to undo the vote in states secured by his Democratic opponent Joe Biden. Trump would have to clear significant legal obstacles, beat widespread criticism, and pressure lawmakers to break political norms in at least 3 states to succeed and become US President.
Republican lawmakers from Michigan gathered in the White House on 20 November. State lawmakers are being told to challenge the popular vote that Biden won, and award 16 electoral votes of Michigan to Trump amid allegations that elections were rigged.

Similar attempts are in progress in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to rob their respective electoral votes won by Biden.
The recount of votes in Georgia ordered by Trump resulted in Biden’s lead on 19 November, again failed to produce a plausible legal challenge.
Republicans have made about 30 legal challenges so far of which 19 lawsuits have been dismissed, rebuffed, or withdrawn. Experts have stated that Trump has no chance of reversing the result.
