PhosCo (ASX:PHO) has achieved a significant milestone with the approval of its Gassaat phosphate exploration permit by Tunisia’s Consultative Committee of Mines. This breakthrough is expected to pave the way for developing the northern phosphate basin, with the formal grant pending final clearance from the Ministry of National Defence. The permit encompasses a resource estimate of 146 million tonnes of phosphate at 20.6% phosphorus pentoxide, alongside additional prospective targets north of the Chaketma deposit.
Strategic Collaboration with Tunisian Government and EBRD
In a move to enhance the project’s impact, PhosCo has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This collaboration aims to explore advanced phosphate processing technologies, including converting phosphogypsum into inert materials. The partnership also prioritizes community and economic development by supporting local enterprises.
First-of-Its-Kind Agreement in Tunisia’s Phosphate Industry
PhosCo’s managing director highlighted the significance of this pioneering agreement, which aligns stakeholders to ensure sustainable project execution. The EBRD’s involvement is set to facilitate financing options and feasibility studies for the development of phosphate processing facilities. This marks a notable step in strengthening the country’s phosphate industry while addressing global food security needs.
Regional and Community Development Emphasized
The MoU reflects a shared commitment to regional progress. The collaboration is designed to support small and medium enterprises while ensuring that the local community benefits from infrastructure and economic opportunities arising from the project. The company views the initiative as not just a step towards enhancing phosphate production but also a way to contribute to sustainable development goals.
Building Momentum with Sekarna Approval
The Gassaat permit approval follows the success of PhosCo’s Sekarna phosphate project, which recently gained formal authorization, marking a historic first for foreign investors in Tunisia’s mining sector. This momentum underlines the company’s growing role in advancing phosphate exploration and development.
Expanding Global Phosphate Market
The global phosphate market, valued at $280 billion in 2024, is projected to see steady growth due to rising demand for fertilizers. With supportive government policies and strategic initiatives, PhosCo’s projects in Tunisia are positioned to play a key role in addressing this expanding demand.
