CuFe Ltd (ASX:CUF) has entered into a strategic alliance with Emmerson Resources Ltd (ASX:ERM) and Tennant Minerals Ltd (ASX:TMS) to explore the development of a shared copper and gold processing hub in the Tennant Creek region, Northern Territory. This partnership reflects a collaborative approach to advancing copper, gold, and critical metals projects while addressing industry challenges around regulatory, environmental, and financial pressures. By pooling resources, the companies aim to streamline production, cut operational costs, and enhance efficiencies in mineral extraction and processing.
Collaboration to Strengthen Project Viability
The joint initiative brings together CuFe, Emmerson Resources, and Tennant Minerals, collectively managing over 7.3 million tonnes of mineral resources in Tennant Creek. These resources feature average grades of 0.6 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold and 1.7% copper, highlighting the potential for a productive and economically viable operation. Historically, the Tennant Creek Mineral Field has been a significant producer, with previous operations yielding high-grade copper and gold deposits.
CuFe’s executive director, Mark Hancock, emphasized the unique potential of this alliance to establish a multi-user processing facility. Hancock highlighted the historical significance of the Orlando and Gecko deposits, which together produced 127,500 tonnes of copper and 232,000 ounces of gold. This rich production history, combined with recent high-grade discoveries, provides a solid foundation for a regional processing hub that could serve multiple projects.
Evaluating Shared Infrastructure for Increased Efficiency
As a first step, the alliance will conduct a comprehensive scoping study to identify the ideal configuration for a shared processing facility, which will operate under a “hub-and-spoke” model. This approach centralizes processing for several high-grade deposits in the region, enabling accelerated timelines and reduced costs. The study will consider various factors, including optimal plant design, infrastructure needs, environmental considerations, and logistical challenges, all critical to developing a viable processing facility.
If the scoping study yields positive results, the companies plan to progress with a pre-feasibility study. This would advance the project towards establishing a fully operational facility designed to streamline mineral production and drive further exploration in Tennant Creek. The companies are targeting the start of activities in the fourth quarter of 2024, aiming for an efficient and sustainable path to production.
Focus on Regional Synergies and Community Impact
Tennant Minerals’ managing director, Vincent Algar, expressed enthusiasm about the potential for this collaboration to shorten the pathway to production, supporting the ongoing exploration efforts and aligning with the company’s strategy. Emmerson’s managing director, Mike Dunbar, shared similar views, noting that developing high-grade deposits in this region independently has become increasingly challenging. According to Dunbar, a collaborative approach that unites like-minded ASX-listed companies provides the best development option, not only for each company involved but also for the Tennant Creek community.
This alliance marks a strategic shift toward shared resources and cooperative development, positioning CuFe, Emmerson, and Tennant Minerals to leverage their combined strengths and resources effectively. The project could set a precedent for future collaborations in the mining industry, especially in regions with similar regulatory and operational challenges.
