Highlights
- Solis Minerals intersects copper mineralisation at Ilo Este project
- Four distinct mineralised zones identified in drill core
- Second drill hole underway targeting northern magnetic anomaly
Solis Minerals Ltd (ASX:SLM) has reported the intersection of copper mineralisation from its first diamond drill hole at the Ilo Este copper-gold project in southern Peru. The drilling marks a key step in advancing the company’s exploration strategy, with results adding to growing interest in copper-focused exploration across regions where ASX 200 companies also maintain strong exposure.
The first hole intersected intrusive rocks with multiple zones of alteration, veining, and mineralisation, highlighting the geological significance of the project. Assays from laboratory testing are pending, and outcomes are expected to provide further insights into the strength and scale of the mineralised system.
Identifying Copper Zones
Visual inspections of the drill core have outlined four mineralised zones. Near surface, copper oxides were identified in joints and fractures, followed by mixed oxides and sulphides at greater depth. Deeper intervals revealed stockwork zones with disseminated chalcopyrite and, further down, stronger mineralisation containing chalcopyrite and molybdenite within quartz veining.
This combination of mineralised zones suggests a porphyry system with considerable continuity. Structural features such as brecciation, faulting, and intrusive contacts have reinforced the geological model guiding the drilling campaign.
Structural and Geological Features
The drill hole intersected varying intrusive units, including microdiorite and quartz diorite, before entering granodiorite linked to the regional Coastal Batholith. Alteration patterns shifted with depth, from biotite and quartz veining near surface to stronger potassic alteration and multi-phase quartz veining at deeper levels.
Magnetite observed in sections of the drill core aligns with earlier geophysical surveys, strengthening the case for mineralisation linked to the northern magnetic anomaly.
Second Drill Hole in Progress
A second hole has already commenced approximately two hundred metres from the first, with the aim of expanding the understanding of mineralisation across the target area. The ongoing program is designed to test multiple anomalies through a series of diamond holes, each positioned to assess both geochemical and geophysical signatures.
The current exploration adds to earlier work at Ilo Este, where historical programs and recent surveys outlined prospects consistent with a large porphyry system. Results from the drilling now underway are expected to provide a framework for step-out exploration and resource evaluation in future phases.
