Sarytogan Graphite Ltd (ASX:SGA) is set to meet a growing demand in the cast iron industry with its Micro80C graphite product, specifically developed to serve as a recarburizer in grey cast iron manufacturing. Recent testing has confirmed the product's suitability, spotlighting Sarytogan Graphite's potential as a key supplier to this high-volume industrial market.
Grey cast iron, a crucial material in industries requiring durable metal components, is manufactured by adding carbon to enhance strength and flexibility. This process, called recarburizing, reintroduces carbon back into the iron, and products like Micro80C are highly sought after for their efficiency in this role. With a global grey cast iron market estimated at 31 million tonnes per year, Sarytogan Graphite’s product addresses a considerable demand for recarburizers, estimated at approximately 1 million tonnes annually.
Sarytogan Graphite sees this high-volume market as a strategic opportunity to expand its operations. As stated by Managing Director Sean Gregory, this additional market segment could provide a stable foundation for the company’s growth, potentially expanding the scope of the Sarytogan Graphite Project beyond the volumes projected in the recent pre-feasibility study. Gregory also highlighted the ongoing efforts to further validate the product through targeted tests and client samples.
To achieve this, Sarytogan Graphite has initiated the processing of a 20-tonne trial mining sample from its flagship Sarytogan Graphite Deposit in Kazakhstan. The milled ore will undergo several stages of refinement. Initially, one tonne will be air-freighted to Australia, where it will be converted into flotation concentrate. A portion of this concentrate will subsequently be sent to the United States for additional purification tests.
These refined samples are expected to generate hundreds of kilograms of product, ready for machine vendor testing and potential customer evaluation. This stage is a critical milestone in commercializing the deposit, which holds an impressive 229-million-tonne resource, grading at 28.9% total graphitic carbon, translating to an estimated 66 million tonnes of contained graphite.
Through this meticulous testing and preparation process, Sarytogan Graphite Ltd aims to position itself as a reliable supplier within the cast iron manufacturing sector, bringing its Micro80C graphite product closer to market readiness. With the high-volume demand in this segment, the company's efforts reflect a calculated step toward solidifying its role in the cast iron industry’s supply chain.
