Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO), a prominent name in the mining industry, has engaged Australian space exploration firm Fleet Space Technologies to advance its lithium exploration efforts at the Rincon Lithium Project in Argentina. This collaboration aims to enhance Rio Tinto's understanding of lithium reserves within the 'lithium triangle,' a region renowned for its rich lithium resources.
Fleet Space Technologies brings its cutting-edge ExoSphere technology to the table, allowing Rio Tinto to develop comprehensive 3D subsurface maps across 100 square kilometers of salt flats and nearby volcanic formations. This advanced exploration technique provides detailed images of the reservoir, including crucial details on basement depth and the structures that influence brine flow. By utilizing ExoSphere's real-time data capabilities, Rio Tinto expects quicker and more detailed insights, accelerating the project timeline with minimal environmental impact.
ExoSphere’s technology offers a complete exploration solution that integrates ambient noise tomography (ANT) with Fleet Space’s satellite network, enabling data collection and processing at unprecedented speeds. This technology allows for in-depth 3D subsurface exploration, reaching depths of up to five kilometers and delivering near-instantaneous results, which enhances Rio Tinto's capabilities to conduct responsible and precise exploration activities.
Fleet Space Technologies' CEO Flavia Tata Nardini highlighted the shared vision between the two companies, emphasizing their commitment to pioneering innovations that can contribute to global sustainability goals. This partnership is particularly significant in light of Rio Tinto’s strategic focus on expanding its footprint in the battery materials sector, aligning with its broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
Rio Tinto’s Rincon Lithium Project is a substantial lithium-brine development located in one of the most promising lithium regions globally. This project is poised to become a reliable source of high-quality lithium carbonate, essential for meeting the rising demand in the renewable energy sector. The company’s CEO, Jakob Stausholm, remarked on the Rincon Project's strategic value, positioning Rio Tinto to support the global energy transition with battery-grade lithium that can be produced efficiently from raw brine.
