Highlights

  • MTM Critical Metals partners with Indium Corp for US critical minerals recovery.
  • Collaboration utilizes Flash Joule Heating (FJH) for sustainable metal recovery.
  • Targets semiconductor, defense, and high-tech supply chain gaps.

MTM Critical Metals (ASX:MTM) has entered a significant strategic partnership with Indium Corporation, a New York-based leader in refined gallium, germanium, and indium supply. The alliance aims to bolster the domestic supply of critical minerals essential for high-tech and defense sectors in the United States.

Advanced Technology in Focus

MTM’s subsidiary, Flash Metals USA, holds exclusive rights to the Flash Joule Heating (FJH) technology, an innovative method for recovering high-value metals. This cutting-edge approach enhances efficiency, reduces environmental impact, and minimizes energy consumption compared to traditional recovery methods.

The collaboration will focus on recovering critical materials such as gallium, germanium, and indium from scrap sources provided by Indium Corp. These materials are integral to applications in semiconductors, solar cells, fiber optics, and military technologies.

Addressing Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

MTM's chief executive emphasized the importance of the partnership in addressing supply chain vulnerabilities for essential metals. The company plans to utilize FJH technology to establish a sustainable domestic supply, reducing reliance on external sources. This collaboration aligns with national efforts to achieve greater independence in critical minerals supply.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlines a process where MTM will handle scrap materials supplied by Indium Corp. The focus is on developing advanced recovery methods, ensuring that these valuable resources are reclaimed efficiently.

Industry-Endorsed Efforts

Testing of the supplied feedstock is already underway at MTM’s Texas-based laboratory. Indium Corp, a leader in specialty technology metals, expressed strong support for the project, highlighting the importance of "urban mining" and secondary raw materials in securing future supply chains.

Indium Corp’s business unit manager underscored the sustainability of FJH technology, which aligns with the company’s goals of reducing dependence on external resources.

Government and Industry Backing

MTM has also applied for a grant from the US Department of Energy, with potential funding of up to $15 million. Indium Corp has committed to providing feedstock to support this grant application, further solidifying the partnership.

This collaboration showcases the potential of FJH technology to meet the rising demand for critical materials in electronics, defense, and renewable energy sectors. By advancing metal recovery processes and reducing environmental impact, MTM Critical Metals (MTM) and Indium Corp are paving the way for a resilient and sustainable supply chain in the US.
