Highlights

  • Metro Mining achieves record shipments at Bauxite Hills Mine in 2024.
  • New multi-cargo contract signed with Emirates Global Aluminium.
  • Adverse weather impacts December shipment schedule but resilience demonstrated.

Metro Mining (ASX:MMI) has achieved a significant milestone with its Bauxite Hills Mine, recording annual shipments of 5.7 million wet metric tonnes (WMT) in 2024. This marks a 24% increase over 2023 figures and sets a new record for the independent bauxite producer. The mine operated consistently at, and at times above, its target expansion rate of 7 million WMT per annum during the year.

Successful Trials and New Contracts

The year also saw the successful trial of capesize cargo shipments, a key step toward streamlining operations. Building on this, Metro Mining secured a multi-cargo offtake agreement with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) for 2025. Shipments under this contract will supply high-temperature alumina refineries in Abu Dhabi. For 2025, the company has set a shipment target range of 6.5 to 7 million WMT, reflecting its commitment to maintaining robust operational performance.

Weather Challenges Impact 2024 Guidance

Despite the record-setting achievements, adverse weather conditions in December posed challenges to Metro Mining's shipping schedule. High wave heights of up to 3.5 meters led to the cancellation of the final capesize vessel, resulting in missed shipment guidance for 2024. However, the company demonstrated operational resilience during these conditions. Its offshore floating terminal, Ikamba, maintained operations during loading windows, a capability that Metro Mining plans to leverage in future extended operating seasons.

Strong Q4 Performance

Metro Mining reported December shipments of 480,000 WMT, contributing to a Q4 total of 2.1 million WMT. An additional 100,000 WMT was loaded in early January 2025 before concluding operations for the 2024 production season. The company is now focused on its annual wet season maintenance program to prepare for the next operating cycle.

Expanding Horizons in Bauxite Production

Located on the Weipa bauxite plateau, Bauxite Hills Mine continues to play a critical role in the energy transition by supplying high alumina bauxite for aluminium production. The company ships directly to global customers using very large ore carriers. As aluminium demand grows, driven by its role in renewable energy and infrastructure projects, Metro Mining remains positioned as a key supplier in this evolving market.

By addressing challenges and capitalizing on new opportunities, Metro Mining continues to strengthen its foothold in the bauxite industry.
