Highlights

  • Exclusive rights secured for innovative silver extraction process
  • Technology preserves valuable silicon wafers for reuse
  • Integrated solution supports clean energy recycling

Lithium Universe (ASX:LU7) has taken a decisive step in the solar recycling sector by acquiring the worldwide rights to Macquarie University’s Jet Electrochemical Silver Extraction (JESE) Technology. This move aligns with the growing focus on sustainable recovery methods and the rising need for high-purity materials in renewable energy systems.

The JESE process offers a precision method for extracting silver from photovoltaic (PV) cells without damaging the silicon wafers. When integrated with the company’s existing Microwave Joule Heating Technology (MJHT), it delivers a comprehensive recycling pathway for solar panels. While LU7 is not part of the ASX 200, its innovative approach places it in a competitive position within the clean technology space.

How the Technology Works

The JESE system employs a low-voltage electrochemical jet using dilute nitric acid to target silver in PV cells. This method converts silver into soluble ions, which are then recovered as high-purity metal through electrochemical deposition. The wafers remain intact and can be reused in PV manufacturing or upgraded for other applications, such as advanced battery materials.

By avoiding conventional grinding and high-temperature processes, JESE significantly reduces contamination and chemical waste. The electrolyte is recirculated, minimising resource consumption while adhering to circular economy principles.

Integration for a Circular Economy

The integration of JESE with MJHT enhances the recovery of multiple valuable materials from end-of-life solar panels. MJHT gently separates glass and silicon wafers without damaging their structure, creating the ideal conditions for JESE’s targeted silver removal. Together, the two technologies form a low-waste, high-efficiency recycling system that reduces environmental impact while unlocking commercial opportunities.

With silver playing a crucial role in PV cells, electronics, and emerging technologies, the ability to reclaim this resource from solar waste supports both supply resilience and environmental sustainability. Lithium Universe’s focus on scalability ensures the technology is positioned for global application as solar installations continue to grow.

Frequently Asked Questions
