  • Vulcan Energy receives construction approval for key geothermal-lithium project in Germany
  • Project aims to produce clean power and lithium from the same brine resource
  • Initiative supports Europe's sustainable energy and EV battery goals

Vulcan Energy Resources (ASX:VUL) has reached a significant milestone with the approval and permit issuance for a 30-megawatt geothermal renewable energy plant and electrical substation in Landau, Germany. This development is a pivotal step in the company’s Lionheart Project, which integrates clean energy production with lithium extraction in an innovative co-production model.

The Landau facility will serve a dual purpose: generating baseload renewable electricity for the German grid and supporting Vulcan’s integrated lithium operations. This clean energy will be sourced from the same deep geothermal brine that powers its lithium extraction process, offering an environmentally friendly solution for two critical needs—energy and battery-grade lithium.

Currently, Vulcan operates a 4.8MW geothermal energy system and provides commercial renewable heat sales. The upcoming expansion marks a considerable scale-up of operations in the Upper Rhine Valley Brine Field, where hot geothermal fluids will be circulated through a network of 24 wells. These fluids will not only power turbines to generate electricity but also enable the extraction of lithium hydroxide, a crucial ingredient for electric vehicle batteries.

This strategy supports broader European goals for energy independence and sustainability. By producing both geothermal electricity and lithium hydroxide locally, the initiative aligns with Europe's ambitions to reduce reliance on imported raw materials and fossil fuels. Vulcan believes the geothermal component will make a meaningful contribution to the continent's renewable energy mix.

Commenting on the development, Vulcan Energy’s management underscored the company’s vision of leveraging geothermal brine for both power and lithium production. The project reflects an innovative model for vertically integrated, sustainable resource use, offering environmental and economic benefits to the region.

Once operational, the Landau facility will not only reinforce Vulcan’s energy footprint in Germany but also help establish a long-term, domestic source of sustainable lithium for Europe’s fast-growing battery and electric vehicle industry.

This approval brings Vulcan Energy one step closer to becoming a central player in Europe’s clean energy and electric mobility landscape—powering grids and enabling battery production from the same renewable source.
