  • BHP's Olympic Dam mine to be offline for two weeks due to transmission tower damage.
  • The outage extends from the originally expected one-week downtime.
  • Power restoration efforts are ongoing after storms caused significant damage.

Mining giant BHP (ASX:BHP) has announced that its Olympic Dam copper mine, located in northern South Australia, will remain offline for an extended period following severe damage to electricity transmission infrastructure. Initially, the mine was expected to be out of action for a week; however, after further assessment, it has been confirmed that operations will be halted for a total of two weeks.

The disruption stems from a wild storm that struck last Thursday night, damaging several large transmission towers responsible for delivering electricity to the Olympic Dam mine. These towers, which support energy flow to both the mine and the nearby town of Roxby Downs, were bent over by the force of the storm, causing an immediate halt in operations.

BHP stated on Monday that they had been in close consultation with ElectraNet, the operator of the electricity transmission infrastructure. After thoroughly assessing the scope of the damage and the steps required to restore power, the company revised its recovery timeline, extending the downtime from seven days to approximately 14 days. This extended outage will allow time for the restoration of electricity, ensuring the mine can return to full operation.

The Olympic Dam mine plays a crucial role in BHP’s copper production. It has previously experienced a similar disruption. In 2016, the mine was offline for 15 days due to storm-related damage to transmission towers, which resulted in significant financial impacts for the company. BHP estimated that incident cost approximately $137 million in lost revenue. While the financial impact of the current outage remains unclear, the delay in resuming operations is likely to cause a notable interruption in copper output.

The company continues to work closely with ElectraNet to expedite the repairs and ensure that the infrastructure is fully operational as soon as possible. Power restoration is critical to both the mining operations and the surrounding region, as Roxby Downs also depends on the same infrastructure for electricity.

With copper being an essential material for various industries, any disruption to its supply can have ripple effects on the global market. As BHP manages this challenge, the company is focused on minimizing further delays and ensuring a smooth return to full production at Olympic Dam.
