Highlights
- BPH Global reappoints Gaia Mariculture for advanced seaweed R&D in Singapore.
- Scope includes AI, blockchain integration, and sustainable farming innovations.
- Research to explore seaweed's role in critical mineral extraction and carbon capture.
BPH Global (ASX:BP8), a plant-based biotechnology company, has renewed its collaboration with Gaia Mariculture to manage seaweed research and development (R&D) at Singapore’s Marine Aquaculture Centre. The two-year agreement solidifies their partnership to advance innovations in seaweed cultivation and its applications.
Enhanced Seaweed Cultivation and Research
Under the renewed arrangement, Gaia Mariculture will focus on cultivating BPH’s existing germplasm seedbank for deployment in pristine waters and developing a new seedbank dedicated to strains that thrive in metal-contaminated environments. The aim is to enhance seaweed’s mineral content, making it suitable for nutraceutical and critical mineral extraction applications.
Gaia will also refine BPH’s proprietary production technologies, which include designing nutrient formulations, optimizing seedling development, and implementing standardized cultivation processes. These advancements are expected to bolster seaweed’s role in addressing nutritional and environmental challenges.
Blockchain and Carbon Capture Initiatives
A major aspect of this collaboration involves developing blockchain technologies to ensure biological traceability and promote sustainable farming practices. This technology will measure carbon capture by seaweed, facilitating the issuance of blue carbon credits to reward sustainable practices.
The agreement also includes a feasibility study on phycomining, a technique to bioaccumulate and recover valuable metals from seaweed biomass. The study aims to determine whether seaweed grown in polluted waters naturally absorbs metals or does so at elevated levels, paving the way for innovative recovery methods.
AI-Driven Genetic Research
Gaia will supervise outsourced research on developing an artificial intelligence (AI) genetic algorithm for identifying and editing seaweed genome variants. This technology will be applied to enhance breeding and gene editing processes. Furthermore, AI-powered imaging will be used to improve mineral extraction from seaweed, advancing phyto-hydrometallurgical techniques.
Strengthened Partnership
Gaia Mariculture, based in Malaysia, initially partnered with BPH Global in 2023. The company has played a critical role in BPH’s efforts to cultivate, harvest, and process seaweed on a commercial scale. This renewed agreement emphasizes Gaia’s strategic alignment with BPH’s long-term goals, including potential joint ventures for seaweed cultivation in Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia.
This partnership highlights the growing role of innovative technologies in leveraging seaweed’s potential for sustainable farming, mineral extraction, and environmental benefits. Through collaboration, BPH Global and Gaia Mariculture aim to shape the future of seaweed research and its global applications.
