Clever Culture Systems (ASX:CC5) has strengthened its partnership with AstraZeneca through an order for four additional APAS microbiological scanners, valued at $3 million over a seven-year period. The agreement includes annual maintenance and support services, underscoring the long-term potential of this collaboration.

The APAS (Automated Plate Assessment System) automates the imaging and analysis of microbiological cultures on plates in laboratory environments. This innovative system offers efficiency and precision in processes that are vital for pharmaceutical operations. The latest order builds upon AstraZeneca’s initial commitment and brings the total number of APAS units delivered to 12.

This expansion reflects growing confidence in the APAS platform, which was introduced to the market only in March. To date, the total value of machines ordered by AstraZeneca stands at approximately $7 million. Clever Culture Systems’ advancements in adapting the APAS system to accommodate smaller 55mm plates were instrumental in securing the latest order. This feature enables automation of additional tests performed during routine environmental monitoring, a critical aspect of drug manufacturing.

According to Clever Culture Systems’ CEO Brent Barnes, the addition of functionality for contact plates was a decisive factor in AstraZeneca’s decision to integrate APAS Independence into its operations globally. The pharmaceutical giant is expected to finalize internal validation of the system in the coming months, progressively integrating the technology into routine drug manufacturing processes.

The APAS system is poised to play a significant role in enhancing efficiency and compliance within AstraZeneca’s global manufacturing infrastructure. This extended rollout not only cements the collaboration between the two companies but also positions Clever Culture Systems as a key player in microbiological automation technology.

This development represents a significant milestone for Clever Culture Systems, highlighting the demand for cutting-edge automation solutions in the pharmaceutical industry.
