  • Investigation reveals unauthorized bets across multiple tennis matches.
  • Penalty aims to address gambling risks and protect vulnerable users.

Tabcorp Holdings Limited (ASX:TAH) is facing a significant financial penalty of $262,920 following a breach of Australian betting regulations. An investigation conducted by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) uncovered that Tabcorp accepted 854 in-play bets on tennis matches, an action prohibited under Australian law to protect individuals from gambling harm. The bets were reportedly placed between April and October 2023, covering 69 tennis matches.

Australian regulations strictly ban online in-play betting, as it allows people to place bets during a sporting event rather than prior to its start. According to ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood, the prohibition on in-play betting serves a critical role in reducing gambling risks. Lidgerwood emphasized that in-play betting can increase the risk of harm because it enables bettors to place frequent bets on numerous outcomes within a single event. She stated that lifting such restrictions could potentially expose vulnerable individuals to heightened risks associated with compulsive gambling behaviors.

The investigation, led by the ACMA, found that Tabcorp violated this regulatory guideline, which has been designed to limit easy access to high-frequency betting options that are typically more tempting during live sporting events. Lidgerwood noted that the penalty imposed on Tabcorp reflects the seriousness with which ACMA views these breaches and underscores the regulatory body’s commitment to enforcing Australia’s gambling laws.

As a result of this enforcement action, shares of Tabcorp experienced a decline, falling by 4.9% to 48.5¢. The drop in share value highlights the market's response to regulatory pressures on companies in the gambling sector, where compliance with national standards is crucial.

The penalty imposed on Tabcorp serves as a warning to other operators within the industry, underlining that non-compliance with established laws can result in substantial financial and reputational costs. With the increasing scrutiny around gambling practices in Australia, ACMA remains dedicated to protecting individuals from gambling-related harm by ensuring strict adherence to betting regulations.
